Five Mile Creek Cleanup
In its third annual creek cleanup, the Five Mile Creek Partnership and the Magic City Chapter of Alabama Power's Service Organization removed 1.6 tons of trash from Five Mile Creek in Roebuck near Huffman High School and Roebuck Parkway. One hundred volunteers showed up to help pick up trash and plant an outdoor classroom for area students.
Community Involvement
In order to improve water quality and reduce flooding on Five Mile Creek, The Land Trust is currently researching the feasibility of constructing a wet retention structure along the creek in Tarrant. Area businesses have donated over $50,000 to this study and results are expected later this summer.
Valuable Partnerships
The Land Trust is partnering with Samford University and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a plan for protecting Seven Springs and the endangered watercress darters that live in it.
Increasing our Level of Trust
The Land Trust is continuing to buy land through the Jefferson County Greenways Program. Through their program, the Land Trust has purchased over 3,500 acres that preserve over 60 miles of rivers and streams within Jefferson County, Alabama.
1,108-Acre Urban Park
The Land Trust is working to make one of the largest urban parks in the nation a reality. The 1,108-acre Red Mountain Park represents U.S. Steel's largest philanthropic contribution ever. Check the Friends of Red Mountain Park site for the latest news.
